Frequently asked questions

How do you create your designs?

Each design begins with a rough pen or pencil sketch. Compositional refinements and cleanup are usually done in Adobe Photoshop but sometimes I stick with paper and pen/pencil. Some of the designs are inspired by places I visit while others are from my imagination or based on popular culture.

Are the paper structures laser cut?

Original prototypes and certain one-offs as well as all pieces produced prior to June 2020 are cut by hand.

Starting in June 2020, I have been cutting my "production" designs on my 65W laser cutter. The paper tunnel book structures are then assembled by hand.

When I connect the 9v battery to my Lightbox, the blue LED turns ON briefly and then goes out. The green (or other colored) LED stays on. Is the blue LED burning out?

Different color LEDs require slightly different voltages to turn ON. As the battery gets used up, its voltage drops, eventually forcing some LEDs to turn OFF sooner than others. Blue LEDs have a higher voltage requirement than many other colors so they will be the first to turn OFF when the battery gets too weak. Replace your 9v battery with a fresh one (alkaline is better, Lithium is best) or use the USB cable and a USB power supply.

How long do the LEDs last?

LEDs last a very long time. After many years of continuous use, LEDs will eventually start to lose their brightness. You can expect an LED to lose about 30% of its brightness after several years of continuous 24/7 use, but this varies with the LED manufacturer. Normal usage of a few hours per day should have the LEDs lasting many, many years. In the rare case that an LED does burn out, contact me for repair.
